What a copied Copilot answer contains
- Superscript citation numbers (¹ ²) and a Learn more list of links when it searched the web.
- Shorter answers with bold lead-ins and hyphen bullets; emoji in the more casual conversation styles.
- Links arrive as [text](url) markdown or bare URLs.
- The Copilot chat app is a different product from Copilot inside Word and Excel (Microsoft 365), which writes into the document directly.
- Tables as markdown pipes; headings as **bold lines** rather than # headings.
What is different about Copilot's output
Copilot is the assistant most people did not go looking for: it is in Windows, in Edge, in Bing and in the Microsoft 365 apps, so a lot of text gets written in it almost by accident. Its chat answers are short and templated — a framing sentence, three to five bullets with bold lead-ins, a closing line — and when it has searched the web, each cited sentence ends with a superscript number and the answer ends with a Learn more list of links. Bold lines stand in for headings. Emoji appear freely in the casual conversation styles. Tables are markdown pipes.
Copy gives you all of that as text. The superscripts and the asterisks show literally in Word, Docs, email and every social box, and the Learn more links come along as a block. Copilot inside Word and Excel — the Microsoft 365 version — is a different product that writes into the document directly and needs none of this; everything here is for the chat app.
Removing the formatting, or converting it
The editor above removes. Paste a Copilot answer and the markdown goes, links become readable text with the address, hidden characters from quoted web pages are stripped, and bold and bullets can be kept as Unicode characters that plain-text boxes cannot strip. That is the tool for LinkedIn and X posts, Upwork proposals, plain-text email, CRM notes and forms. The preferences add the rest — Remove emojis is the one Copilot answers need most — along with the em dash replacement and the full markdown strip.
The destination pages convert. Copilot to Word and Copilot to Google Docs remove the superscript citation marks on paste — digits glued to a word, never the ² in km² — keep the Learn more links for your references, and turn the bold lead-ins and bullets into real document formatting. For Copilot's tables, the ChatGPT table to Excel and Google Sheets converters read the same markdown pipes. For Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Discord, Reddit, WhatsApp, Telegram and Notion, the platform formatters linked above do the same for chat and email.
Citations: marks out, links kept
Removing a superscript number is not the same as removing the source. Every Copilot page here keeps the Learn more list as clickable links, so the destination can cite properly — footnotes in Word or Docs, a references block, a Source column in a sheet. Delete the list once your citations are in. When the provenance of one claim matters, ask Copilot to name the source in the sentence ("according to the 2025 report") rather than relying on a mark that will be stripped.
The tell, and what to do about it
Copilot's version of the generated-text tell is its template: the same framing sentence, the same bold-lead-in bullets, the same closing offer, an emoji per section in the friendlier styles. The tools fix the markup and the punctuation in one paste — the em dash remover handles the dash question, the Remove emojis toggle handles the rest — and the template you break by editing: cut the framing and the sign-off, merge bullets that are one point, let one paragraph run longer than the others. Asking Copilot for the Precise style at the start produces plainer text to begin with.
