Copilot to Google Docs

Paste an answer from the Copilot app, website or sidebar and copy it into Google Docs as native formatting — bold lead-ins, bullets, numbered steps and links — with the superscript citation marks removed and the markdown and hidden characters gone.

How do I paste a Copilot answer into Google Docs?

A copied Copilot chat answer carries superscript citation numbers (¹ ²), a Learn more list and markdown-style bold and bullets that Docs shows literally. Paste it into the editor above — the superscripts are removed and the structure rebuilt on paste — then click Copy and paste into your Doc. Bold, lists and links arrive as Docs formatting, and the Learn more links are kept for your references. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Copy the answer in Copilot

Use the copy button under the answer or select the text. Copilot's copy gives plain or markdown text with citation superscripts; either form is read correctly here.

  2. Paste it above

Markdown becomes real structure, hidden characters are removed, and the editor shows exactly what will be pasted.

  3. Copy for Google Docs

Click Copy and paste into Google Docs. Headings, bold, lists and quotes arrive as native formatting.

What a copied Copilot answer contains

Microsoft's assistant, Google's document

Plenty of people use Copilot — it is in Windows, in Edge, in the Microsoft 365 apps at work — and write in Google Docs. The two do not talk to each other. Copilot inside Word writes into Word; the Copilot chat app answers in a window and hands you a copy button. What that button gives you is text with superscript citation numbers after the cited sentences, a Learn more list of links, **bold** lead-ins and hyphen bullets, and whatever hidden characters came with the web pages it quoted. Pasted into Docs, the superscripts and asterisks show as typed, and Paste from Markdown in Docs' Edit menu renders the bullets but leaves the citation marks where they are.

This page is the bridge. The superscript marks are removed on paste — digits glued to a word or punctuation mark, never the ² in km² — the markup becomes visible structure in the editor, the hidden characters go, and Copy puts rich text on the clipboard that Docs pastes as its own formatting, at your cursor, in your document's styles.

Keeping the sources without the marks

The Learn more list is kept, as a list of clickable links, because removing the marks does not remove the reason to cite. In Docs the natural move is footnotes: place the cursor after the sentence a link supports, Insert → Footnote, paste the link. Or keep the list as a References section at the end, or delete it in one selection once your own citations are in. Links Copilot embedded in the body text itself stay clickable.

Copilot's structure converts cleanly. Bold lead-ins on bullets stay bold; hyphen bullets become real Docs bullets; numbered steps become a numbered list; the bold lines Copilot uses in place of headings arrive as bold and can be promoted to Heading 1–3 with the toolbar so they appear in the document outline. Emoji from the casual conversation styles are visible in the editor and quick to remove.

Short, templated, and how to make it read written

Copilot chat answers have a recognisable shape: a framing sentence, a handful of bullets each starting with a bold phrase, a closing offer. Once the markup is converted that pastes as a neat block, and the neatness is the tell. In the Doc, merge the bullets that make one point, cut the framing and the sign-off, and let a paragraph run long where the idea needs it. The hidden characters — non-breaking spaces from quoted pages, stray zero-width characters — are already gone, so the lines wrap where they should and the text behaves like something you typed: comments, suggestions and version history all work on it.

What Docs receives

Real bold and italic, bulleted and numbered lists with nesting, Heading styles where you promoted a line, indented quotes, clickable links, monospaced inline code. No superscript marks, no background colour; the text inherits the Doc's font. Tables do not travel on the rich copy — Copilot's markdown tables go through the ChatGPT to Google Sheets converter, and the copied grid pastes into a Doc as a Docs table. The conversion runs in your browser; the answer is never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Copilot's superscript citation numbers removed?

Yes, on paste. Superscript digits attached to a word or punctuation are treated as citations; a superscript after a unit such as km² is kept. The Learn more list of links stays.

Can I turn the Learn more links into footnotes in Docs?

Yes. The list pastes as links; for each one, place the cursor after the sentence it supports, Insert → Footnote, and paste the link.

Why doesn't Docs' Paste from Markdown fix this?

It renders the bullets and bold but leaves the superscript marks, hidden characters and emoji exactly where they were. This page removes those and shows the structure before it lands.

Is this for Copilot in Microsoft 365?

No — that Copilot writes into Word directly. This page is for answers copied from the Copilot chat app, website, or Windows and Edge sidebars.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with client-side JavaScript. The Copilot answer is never sent to a server, stored or logged.
