What a copied Gemini answer contains
- Markdown with asterisk bullets (* item), **bold** lead-ins on list items and heading levels that jump from ## to ####.
- The copy button gives markdown text only, so Word, Docs and email show the symbols.
- Has its own Export to Docs and Export to Sheets buttons under answers and tables, for Google accounts.
- Tables often have a bold first column and cells that mix numbers with units ("12 kg").
- Nested lists use four-space indents that some editors ignore.
- Emoji and "Here's a breakdown" openers in casual answers; em dashes in formal ones.
What is different about Gemini's output
Gemini's answers are organised for skimming: short sections, a bold lead-in at the start of nearly every list item, asterisk bullets, and heading levels that jump when it wants a sub-point. Casual answers open with "Sure!" or "Here's a breakdown" and put an emoji at the head of each section; formal ones reach for em dashes. Its tables have a bold first column and units written into the cells. And it has something no other assistant has: Export to Docs under answers and Export to Sheets under tables, which make a new Google file with the structure intact.
The copy button, by contrast, gives markdown only. There is no rich version on the clipboard, so Word, Google Docs on a normal paste, email and every social box show the asterisks and hashes. The pages on this site are the bridge between Gemini's copy button and the places the export buttons do not reach.
Removing the formatting, or converting it
The editor above removes. Paste a Gemini answer and the markdown goes, headings become plain lines, links become readable text with the address, hidden characters are stripped, and bold and bullets are optionally kept as Unicode characters that plain-text boxes cannot strip. That is the tool for LinkedIn and X posts, Upwork proposals, plain-text email, CRM notes and forms. The preferences add the Gemini-specific fixes: strip the emoji, replace the dashes, straighten the quotes, remove the rest of the markdown.
The destination pages convert. Gemini to Word is the route Gemini lacks — Export only reaches Docs. Gemini to Google Docs is for answers going into a Doc you already have, where Export would create a second file. Gemini to Excel is the Excel route Export to Sheets cannot take, and Gemini to Google Sheets covers the existing-sheet, several-tables and text-numbers cases. For Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Discord, Reddit, WhatsApp, Telegram and Notion, the platform formatters linked above read Gemini's markdown the same way.
Using Gemini's own buttons well
Export to Docs is the right choice when the answer is the whole document and a new Doc is fine: a draft, a lesson plan, a Deep Research report. Export to Sheets is right for one clean table into a new spreadsheet. Both fall short when the answer belongs inside something that already exists, when there are several tables, or when the destination is Microsoft Office — and both carry Gemini's hidden characters and text-formatted numbers along unchanged. Think of the buttons as "new file" and the pages here as "into my file".
The tell, and what to do about it
Gemini's version of the generated-text tell is the structure: the bold lead-in on every bullet, the emoji per section, the breezy opener, the evenly short paragraphs. The tools here fix the punctuation and the markup in one paste — the em dash remover covers the dash question — and the preferences clear the emoji. The structure you loosen by editing: merge the bullets that are really one point, cut the opener, let a paragraph run long where the idea needs it. Formatting makes the text look typed; editing makes it read written.
