Perplexity to Google Docs

Paste a Perplexity answer and copy it into Google Docs as native formatting, with the inline [1][2] citation markers removed, the markdown converted to Docs headings and lists, and the Sources list kept at the end for your references.

How do I paste a Perplexity answer into Google Docs cleanly?

Perplexity copies as markdown with [1][2] markers after cited sentences; Docs shows the symbols and the numbers. Paste the answer into the editor above — the markers are removed and the gap closed on paste — then click Copy and paste into your Doc. Headings become Heading 1–3, bold and lists stay, links stay clickable, and the Sources list is kept as text. Docs' own Paste from Markdown leaves the markers in. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Copy the answer in Perplexity

Use the copy button under the answer or select the text. Perplexity's copy gives markdown text with citation markers; either form is read correctly here.

  2. Paste it above

Markdown becomes real structure, hidden characters are removed, and the editor shows exactly what will be pasted.

  3. Copy for Google Docs

Click Copy and paste into Google Docs. Headings, bold, lists and quotes arrive as native formatting.

What a copied Perplexity answer contains

Why Paste from Markdown is not enough here

Google Docs can paste markdown now (Edit → Paste from Markdown), and for a ChatGPT answer that is often all you need. A Perplexity answer is different because of what sits between the markdown: [1] and [2][3] after every cited sentence, a Sources list of URLs at the bottom, and the hidden characters that come with text quoted from web pages. Paste from Markdown renders the headings and bullets and leaves all of that exactly where it was. You end up doing the citation clean-up by hand, sentence by sentence, in the Doc.

This page does the clean-up on paste. The inline markers are removed and the spacing closed, so a sentence ending "since 2023 [4]." ends "since 2023." The markdown becomes structure you can see in the editor. The hidden characters go. Then Copy puts rich text on the clipboard that Docs pastes as its own headings, lists and links — at your cursor, in your document's styles, without needing the markdown setting at all.

The Sources list, footnotes and sharing

The Sources list is kept deliberately. A document built on a Perplexity answer should still cite, and Docs makes that easy once the list is in: select a source, Insert → Footnote at the sentence it supports, paste the link. Or keep the list as a "References" section at the end, or delete it in one selection once your own citations are in place. Because the pasted text is ordinary Docs formatting, comments, suggestions and version history work on it, and a collaborator sees the same thing whether they open the Doc in a browser, in Word or on a phone.

Links Perplexity embedded in the text itself are kept as clickable links in Docs. Citations inside a table cell are a separate case: tables do not travel on the rich copy, and the Perplexity to Google Sheets page handles them, stripping a marker like [3] from a cell and typing the figure.

Perplexity's prose in a Doc

Perplexity writes compact, information-dense answers: a heading per sub-question, a bold key term in most paragraphs, long sentences chained with em dashes, and figures in whatever format each source used. Headings map to Heading 1–3 and show up in the document outline; bold is real bold; lists are real lists with nesting. The dashes are kept — a research memo may want them — and the em dash remover replaces them if not. Figures quoted in different formats you reconcile yourself; a tool should not guess which the source meant. Deep Research reports and Pages copy the same way, just longer, and the editor shows the outline before you commit it to the Doc.

What Docs receives

Heading 1, 2 and 3 styles, real bold and italic, bulleted and numbered lists with nesting, indented quotes, clickable links and a monospaced font for inline code. No background colour, no foreign font: the text inherits the Doc. Tables are the one exception and have their own page. The conversion runs in your browser; the Perplexity answer is never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google Docs remove Perplexity's citation markers by itself?

No. A normal paste shows them as text and Paste from Markdown leaves them in place. This page removes the inline [1][2] markers on paste and keeps the Sources list for your references.

Can I turn the Sources list into footnotes?

Yes. The list pastes as text; for each source, place the cursor after the sentence it supports, Insert → Footnote, and paste the link. Delete the list when the footnotes are in.

Do I need a Google account here?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded; you only need to be signed in to Docs to paste.

What about a Perplexity table?

Use Perplexity to Google Sheets. It strips citation markers from cells, types the numbers, and the copied grid pastes into Sheets or straight into the Doc as a Docs table.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with client-side JavaScript. The Perplexity answer is never sent to a server, stored or logged.
